Two Forgotten Guide Books
Original copies of the two fragile pocket-tour books shown are Sarah Foster's 1876 "Portsmouth Guide Book" (1884 reprint shown here) and Helen Pearson's 1913 homage "Vignettes of Portsmouth," (Booklets courtesy Portsmouth Public Library and Portsmouth Athenaeum. Photo by SeacoastNH.com)

The Missing Link
This ad in the back of Foster's early Portsmouth guide was placed by Helen Pearson's mother Susan. Foster, also an accomplished artist, died tragically in 1900. Pearson ran the Broad Street florist shop after her mother's death, published "Vignettes" in 1913 and died in 1949. (From: "Portsmouth Guide Book" 1884)
