The revolutionary new "white bronze" technology of the 1880s proved not to be an effective metal for large monuments. The zinc alloy and the central frame was unable to support the weight and the statue was shortened almost in half as seen in this 1955 newspaper photograph. (Courtesy Portsmouth herald)
