Curiously, this late 1800s photo of the Eldrege Brewery shows a man with a wooden leg (see inset). Was he one of the disabled veterans from the Civil War that brewery owner and Portsmouth Mayor Marcellus Eldrege honored by the creation of the Soldiers and Sailors monument in Goodwin Park?
