Part 3; Biking Great Chebeague Summer 2000

Okay we admit, this was taken at dawn the next day, but it makes for a more scenic opening shot. The 10+ miles of main Great Chebeague roadway runs around the center of the island and for views of the ocean one has to slip down side streets or walk along the shore. This shot is from the northerly end not far from the hotel.

This is pretty much what you see as you bike along tree-lined country roads. Streets have no names on Chebeague and maps even seem to differ which makes exploring more fun.

Everyone makes a beeline for the only store on the island. There is no restaurant other than the one at the hotel and if you don't stock up here (water, snacks, bug spray) you're out of luck. The island also has a wonderful library, recreation center, fire dept., historical society, church, cemetery, public works dept and more.

What the island has mostly is houses, fascinating New England houses of all shapes and sizes. Although many are hidden along the water in the other ring of the island, bikers see a homey tour.

We wanted to take you out to rocky Deer Point and to scenic Chandler Cove. We wanted to take you to the sandy beach area down a winding dirt road where, for four hours a day, you can walk across a sand bar and explore Little Chebeague island. We love Little Chebeague where an 1800s tourist industry flourished, but has now all disappeared just like Smuttynose in the Isles of Shoals. We wanted to show you so many things, but our camera battery died and we were forced to just enjoy ourselves. Anyway, we came this time mostly to see the parade, so let's get back to the hotel!
