Visit to Chebeague Island, Maine
Part 5; Chebeague Parade 2 Summer 2000

Isn't she sweet? The annual July 4 parade on Great Chebeague Island doesn't last long, but it is awash in candy. Great fistfuls of candy are tossed from the floats to onlookers and the few children that are not in the procession scurry to gather up the goods.

Here's one of the missing dogs from the previous picture page! Many others were not seen everywhere.

Even the canines are proud to sport the red, white and blue on this red blooded American island. This patriotic pooch was also fond of the candy coating that remained in the wake of the parade. The music for the event, by the way, is provided by a neighborly record player that sounds, year to year, suspiciously similar to an old Arthur Fiedler Boston Pops soundtrack.

The largest beast on the island, in case you cannot read the sign, was this brown bag dinosaur. Note the old water tower in the background is the same one seen in the early postcard at the opening of this photo tour.

And as the parade rolls down the hill and off into the distance, we bid a fond farewell to Great Chebeague. OK, this is another one of those shots we took earlier in the morning, but you get the point. The mosquitoes and blackflies, by the way, were so ferocious that this shot should be worth some sort of award just for the blood lost in the taking.
