5: Back on the Street

Visitors exit at the bottom of the building, after passing a
reconstructed garden area at the back. It is a quick stop with
effective crowd control, unchanged in its presentation for decades.

Suddenly we're back on the street, and after the tasteful National Park
treatment, the tacky souvenir shop to the right snaps the doleful
visitor back to reality. Yes, that's a cardboard Bill Clinton standing
in the doorway.

To the left of the Peterson House, it's no better, though the T-shirts
are cheaper from a cluster of street vendors.

And if one has the stomach for it, there's always the Lincoln House
where we picked up a snack while waiting to reboard the trolley for our
condensed tour of Washington DC.
