Seacoast Monument #2
SAILORS AND SOLDIERS: 1888
Portsmouth, NH

Dedicated in 1888, shortened in 1955 and ready for rehabilitation in
2000, the Soldiers and Sailors monument in Goodwin Park is dedicated to
veterans of the US Civil War.

The soldier is tilting due to structural failure of the zinc or "white
bronze" material from which the monument is designed. The figure is
illustrated in the 1882 foundry catalog (click to see).

Three sides of the monument are dedicated to Civil War battles, exactly
as they appeared in the Monumental Bronze Company catalog. The fourth side is dedicated to the USS Kearsage, Civil War battleship built in Portsmouth.

At least a dozen early postcards show the Soldiers & Sailors Monument as it appeared around the turn of the century.
