NH SHipwreckStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #10

Shipwrecks along the brief New Hampshire shore were common in the age of sail. As late as November 1898 the Iva Bell fell against the rocks in a storm just off Odiorne Point in Rye. A lifesaving team removed the crew and sent a tugboat out for the two-masted schooner from Belfast, Maine. But the attempt failed in a violent gale and the ship was lost as the waves drove it relentlessly against the ledge.
