Tour of Appledore Island
Page 1 || Page 2 || Page 3

Getting to Appledore Island is a tricky matter. First registered visitors must go to Star Island via the Thomas Laighton, then disembark and board the research vessel R/V John M. Kingsbury.

The captain of the Kingsbury liked this shot, so we sent him a copy via e-mail. For more on the Shoals Laboratory, click here.

SeacoastNH.com hopped a ride with a group of photographers. Here is Nancy Horton snapping shots as the research vessel crosses from New Hampshire to Maine waters. Appledore was originally called Hog Island and, as the largest of the Isles of Shoals, once had a large population of fishing families.

The Kingsbury literally has to back into the rocky cove to make a landing in this precarious port. Here a hoarde of photographers stream ashore for a two hour tour. We left the tour group in the bushes and managed to get lost all by ourselves. The island is mostly rocks and low lying vegetation including poison ivy.
