James Haller was an out of work television writer when he came to Portsmouth via Chicago and New York City in 1969. Today renowned as an author and master chef, Haller scraped together $2,700 to outfit the basement of a battered warehouse across from the tugboats on Ceres Street in 1970.  Only three percent of his original customers at the Blue Strawbery restaurant came from Portsmouth. Out of town visitors, however, loved the unique cuisine and the intimate Theatre-by-the- Sea next door on the rugged waterfront. Portsmouth’s cultural revolution was underway.
