Corner of Market & Daniel Streets
Yesterday, The Sheafe Block, c. 1885, on the corner of Daniel and Market Streets, (see the1813 fire map and 1877 Bird's Eye map) as photographed by the Davis Brothers. As discussed concerning an earlier photo, the Sheafe Block was changed from a 4 storied building into a 3 storied one around 1881 The building is known by its rounded front facing into 'The Square' The ground floor has almost always been a store. As stated in an early 20th century Portsmouth advertisement, the store was "the widely known jewelry, silverware, and optical goods house of Arthur B. Duncan. 1 Market Street, is classed among the foremost of similar concerns in New England and unrivaled east of Boston. Although one of the oldest established jewelry houses in the state, established in 1817, it has only changed hands 4 times during its almost century of continued business and came under the proprietorship of Mr Duncan in November 1902."
Today, The Sheafe Block still has a jewelry store on the ground floor. The cast iron store front was placed into the Sheafe Block in 1893 and is still a feature of the building. The jewelry store is now 'Alie's Jewelry'. The building is very recognizable from the street level to the roof where the same chimneys are seen even though the roof has been altered. There are some other changes however. Most noticeable is the added extension to the Sheafe Block that runs down Daniel Street.
