1 Market Street

Yesterday, 1906, Arthur B. Duncan, jeweler and optician, occupied 1 Market Street. In an advertisement for his store he stated, "Metropolitan in equipment, heavily stocked with the most elegant and highest grade good, and decidedly the largest and finest store in the state, the widely known jewelry, silverware, and optical goods. 1 Market street is classed among the foremost of similar concerns in New England and unrivaled east of Boston. Although one of the oldest established jewelry houses in the state, established in 1817, it has only changed hands 4 times during its almost century of continued business and came under the proprietorship of Mr. Duncan in November 1902.".

Today, Alie Jewelry is the store that occupies 1 Market Street. The current company hired architects to return the building to a turn of the 20th century style, without exactly duplicating the original facade. In the process, windows that had been walled over were reopened and smaller windows along the top revealed in order to bring more light into the store. This is a good sample of the kind of restorative work being done independently by private owners to keep downtown area true to its architectural heritage. This work was done in 2000 and 2001.
