Yesterday and Today by Bill & Connie Warren Previous   Next 9 Pleasant Street Yesterday, 1906, 9 Pleasant Street was the address for Henry P. Payne, Staple and Fancy Grocer. His advertisement reads, "The unrivaled, high class staple and fancy grocery house of Henry P. Payne, was founded in 1822 by Chas. E. Laighton, became Chas E. Laighton & Son in 1881, continued until 1900, then became Payne & Walker in 1904 and was established at the present address." The advertisement then goes on to read, "Large and complete lines of fine groceries are kept, special features being best teas and coffees, superior canned goods, table delicacies and bottled condiments, foreign tid-bits for appetizing dishes, pure olive oils, select wines, family liquors, mineral waters, foreign fruits, etc." Today, this part of the building is part of the Piscataqua Savings Bank complex.
